Great Hamburger Joints in Seoul and other parts of Korea

If you grew up on burgers and fries like me, you probably had a hard time living in Korea a number of years ago.

But no longer do you have to suffer from just McD’s and Burger King!  Korea has landed in the 21st century.  This Top Asian destination has stepped it up when it comes to grilling up some “all beef paddies.”  Here are a few options to seek out if you land in Seoul:

Burger ‘n Shake

Starting at 5900 for a full meal (with fries & a refillable soda), this is an impressive deal for a higher quality burger in Seoul.  I chose the 7900 offering for a Garlic burger when I dropped by and it definitely passed for “better than McD’s” grade!  With the price as well, it almost competes directly with how much you would have to pay for a big mac meal when it’s not on sale.  I haven’t been to the yellow arches in a while here in Korea though.  So, if Ronald’s dropped the prices, feel free to comment below.  I did see a 4400 won deal at Burger King for a Whopper Jr. meal with an ice cream cone thrown on top–and when I had it, I definitely felt unsatisfied or not as full as I would normally be after finishing a Whopper set.

It looks like the chain of hamburger restaurants has 12 locations.   Ten of them are in the Seoul area and the other 2 are in Gangwondo and Daegu.  Specifically, they are:

Seoul Burger n Shake Locations:

  • Apgujeong, 압구정점, 서울 강남구 신사동 582-3 1층, 02-3447-5555

Daegu Burger n Shake, 경북대학병원점, 대구 광역시 중구 삼덕동 2가 50번지 경대병원 2층, 053-420-6451

*Note: the 2nd time I went, I ordered the basic 5900 burger set (bulgogi burger which was a normal burger as far as I could tell) and while it’s still better than McD’s and Burger King, I wasn’t as happy as I would be when finishing a burger at a popular local US restaurant.  Maybe it’s diminishing returns each time you go somewhere? 😉

W Burger

If you search for the phrase “w burger korea” or “w burger seoul,” you’ll probably read a post by someone who gives the place 3.5 stars out of 5 and raves it’s a “bad-ass burger.”  I discovered it on a jog the other night and it sounds like a decent place.  So, I plan on dropping by at a later point and giving you all a better review.  Prices look like your normal “premium burger fare” in Korea around 8-12,000 for a full meal (correction to the prices below in an update!).

Locations: they have 7 restaurants spread between Seoul (4), Yongin ([1] just outside of Seoul), and Chungcheongnam Province ([2] Cheonan, ).  The detailed locations are on their respective location pages on the main website here: Gangnam Restaurant, Gwanghwamun, Samsung Station, Delacourt, Dangook/YonginCheonan: 충남 덩남구 신부동 신세계백화점 4층, 041-640-5516, and Asan. (I’ll try to detail out the addresses and phone numbers which are displayed currently in Adobe Flash.  However, it takes a bit of time with my slow Korean typing skills.  Feel free to ask for specific franchises to be detailed first!)

Update: I tried their Gangnam store earlier today (9/16/2012).  I have to admit it was a decent burger.  Also, the “cheese burger set” was VERY affordable at 6500 won.  While I still don’t get the extra full feeling I get when scarfing down an American burger, I might be able to attribute the smaller portions to me losing weight.  Here’s a pic of the burger & fries & all you can drink soda:

Cheese Burger Set

The only scary thing was that it was almost empty.  There were only 3 sets of customers (one single person) before I sat down.  It was great for a single person walking in – stark contrast to the Julio in Gangnam restaurant up the street.  Julio, the Mexican restaurant that serves up “Slyders” was packed earlier tonight.  I know I wouldn’t have been able to get a seat without pissing some people off.  Hopefully, these guys are busy during the day and weekdays so I can keep on coming back.

*Note: their Samsung Station location was closed on Saturday (at least around 6p when I walked by on 9/15/2012)

15 Great Burger Options in Seoul

I’m not going to recreate the wheel here.  In 2010, the Best Burgers were profiled on a great “foodie” site dedicated to reviews here in Korea offered up a number of great options including:

With all the listings above, I’ll try to fill in the blanks with extra details not provided like “hours of operation” in the 10 provided by Seoul Eats or websites lacking in most of the mentions.
